AROUND ZELL
Starting from the town square, walk up to just before the bridge over the river, then to the right towards the tennis courts and along the Zillerpromenade. An alternative would be the path towards Aschau over the railway bridge, or a walk along the river as far as the Gerlosbach. Cross the bridge to Rohr, near to SkiZell. Follow the road past the transformer station as far as the Gasthof Waldrast (or along the Krauspromenade). Return directly to the centre across the Gerlosbach Bridge or turn left between the Gerlosbach and the express road as far as the Gasthof Waldheim in Kaiserstadt. Follow the cart track along the edge of the forest as far as the subway under the road. After the subway, turn left past the Tannerhof to the Zillerpromenade and back to Zell (walking time for the entire route, approx. 1 1/2 hrs.).

MARIA RAST (HAINZENBERG)

Turn right via the Stations of the Cross (Trail No. 8), past the Lourdes Grotto to the Maria Rast Pilgrimage Church (constructed in 1738, rock-fall in 1914, as a result of which there is now only one tower, while part of the chapel hangs above the precipice). Walking time approx. 45 mins. Other possibilities:
- Cheese-making exhibition and game park (from the chapel, follow Trail No. 8, walking time 15 mins.).
- Descent via Ramsau (path branches shortly after the church). Along a meadow path to the Wischberg Farm. Follow Trail No. 7 to Ramsau (church worth visiting). Back to Zell on foot along the Zillerpromenade, by train or bus (walking time from Maria Rast to Ramsau, approx. 1 hour).

KRAUSPROMENADE (ROHRBERG)

To the right, climbing slightly, begins Trail No. 2, the Krauspromenade, named after the famous singer Dr. Kraus. This shady forest path brings you to the Gerlosbergstrasse after around 45 mins., which you follow as far as the Gerlosberg Bridge, then along Gerlosstrasse back to the town (walking time approx. 1 hour 20 mins.).

ASTACHHOF (GERLOSBERG)
Take the Enzianhof bus (departs from the Hauptschule) as far as the "Innerer Gerlosberg" turnoff. Follow the asphalted road, which is hardly used and mostly flat, for about 4 km (walking time 1 hour) to the Jausenstation Astachhof (snacks). The route is also suitable for families with prams. Along the way, you can see attractive old mountain farmsteads, some of which can only be reached by goods cableways or footpaths. Return from the "Innerer Gerlosberg" turnoff possible on the Enzianhof bus. |
